What is the difference between a divorce and an annulment?
A divorce terminates a marriage. It is recognized that this marriage was once valid, but that it has legally ended.
However, annulments declare a marriage as void. In other words, an annulled marriage is one that was invalid all along.
There are a myriad of reasons one may seek annulment of a marriage. Such reasons include that one individual was mentally incompetent when consenting to the marriage, or that someone was threatened into a marriage.
